It’s lovely having your little’uns home for the holidays. SO lovely! If some fresh air and energy-burning activities are in order, there are lots of special events happening over summer that will excite the whole family. Here are a few of our picks.

Port Arthur Historic Site’s Summer Program

The Port Arthur Historic Site has some fascinating and fun school holiday activities on for kids between 26 December and 26 January. They might even learn something! Visit the Accountant’s House for some crafternoon delight: make your own peg doll, design and make a convict love token or temporary convict tattoo (so you can be less shocked in a few years when your 18 year old comes home with real ink), or discover the art of letter writing and wax sealing.

This summer, there are 52 new Port Arthur Playing Card Characters to meet! Collect a character card when you arrive at the ticketing desk, and follow their stories to the new Port Arthur Gallery and beyond. Grab a free ‘Hidden Stories’ Activity Book as well – it’s a great way for children to explore the site and learn about its history as they search for answers, complete puzzles and collect stamps.

Drama lovers, catch an afternoon performance around the Penitentiary (daily at 2.15pm, 3pm and 3.45pm) to meet historical characters and hear more about their lives at the settlement. If the kids still have energy to burn, challenge the little tikes to a game of quoits or croquet on the lawn.

Activities are offered in two sessions each day, 12pm – 1.30pm and 2pm – 3pm. Check the timetable outside the Education Centre for the day’s activities.

Nickelodeon is back at the Big Bash League!

Good new for kids who love messy, green slime… Nickelodeon is back at the Big Bash League this summer, offering families a variety of activities and entertainment! Catch them at the Hobart Hurricanes vs Brisbane Heat match on Monday 8th January at Blundstone Arena. Kids can meet the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, play cricket with the giant inflatable cricket pitch, and try out Nicket (Nickelodeon’s kids version of cricket using a ball and the backyard staple of a garbage bin). There are also some competitions to enter – just by being in the crowd, families will have a chance to win a family trip to Sea World, and you can also enter to win a family trip to Los Angeles for the 2018 Kids’ Choice Awards.

Kids in the Park at the Taste of Tasmania

While the Taste is on (28 Dec to 3 Jan), Parliament Lawns is transformed into a magical Kids in the Park paradise! Catch a film at the open air Twilight Cinema, find your rhythm in the Creative Marquee, enjoy the exciting and colourful program of local acts on the stage, or get the kids trained to cook for you at Chefaholic Cooking School. Be enchanted at The Nest Storytelling Tent, check out the action at the Skate Ramp, create something awesome with the big blue building blocks at the Imagination Playground, and jump aboard the Tommy Choo Choo train! Test your skills at the physical activity sessions, go off at the New Year’s Eve Silent Disco, eat and drink at the Kids Cafe by Chefaholic, and see what’s on at the Pop-Up Marquee. Oh, and don’t forget to taste all the food!

Take the Fam to Falls Festival

If you’re down at Falls with the fam, you’ll be all set up in the family campgrounds, making friends with the other broods! The kids will love getting their faces painted, gettin’ pretty in the beauty parlours, smashing it out of the water at life-sized foozeball, riding high on the flying foxes, and creating festival magic in the craft corners. There’s also a new environmental playground in the Family Campground this year. Don’t forget about the fun beach activities on Marion Bay beach! This iconic event definitely has the makings of a yearly family tradition (until the kids get too grown up and cool for their daggy old parents).
