It’s that time of year again! Activate your sea legs and join the annual summer pilgrimage to the Hobart waterfront for a lively weekend celebrating all things wooden boat. This year, the waterfront will be bustling with all the happenings of the MyState Australian Wooden Boat Festival from the 10th to 13th February.

What’s this all about then?
This vibrant four-day festival celebrates Australia’s rich maritime culture by bringing together the largest and most beautiful collection of wooden boats in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s a pretty big deal – as one of the world’s most anticipated maritime events, it’s going to be bustling with locals and visitors from all around the globe! There’ll be heaps to do, with demonstrations and displays, live entertainment, music, and a range of yummy local food to tuck in to.

Can I jump aboard?
You certainly can! Immerse yourself in the experience and pick from a lovely range of sailing tours at the festival. You might choose to sail aboard the authentic heritage tall ship SV Rhona H, with many options including short harbour trips, the full day Parade of Sail, the Wrest Point Cup (Ketch Review), and overnight sail-cruises. You can also enjoy the festival from Yukon‘s deck, with tour options including the Parade of Sail and day/evening cruises out of Hobart.

Can I bring the kids?
Yep, round ’em up! If your little acrobats have ever wanted to run away to join the circus, they can get a taste of the circus life at the festival. The Parliament House Lawns in Salamanca are transformed into the Children’s Circus School, with an awesome program of professional entertainment and workshops, including: building a boat, learning simple knots, learning to juggle, getting their face painted, plus heaps more. On Saturday and Sunday hear the cries of ‘ahoy, me hearties!’ echoing around the lawn, as the kids dress up in a mad collection of pirate gear and join the Pirates’ Parade. Too much fun!

Where can I stay?
If you’re one of the many visitors coming from around Tasmania, Australia, or overseas, there are loads of beautiful places to stay around the vibrant Hobart Waterfront. The festival is pretty popular, so you’d be well advised to book somewhere to drop anchor and hang up your hammock in advance. Here are a few of our favourites within a stone’s throw of the festival (we were just kidding about the hammocks):
