The Coal River Valley is a region known for its rich history, exceptional wines, and the charming town of Richmond.

Just a 25-minute drive from Hobart, the valley feels like a world away with its rolling vineyards, historic buildings, and gourmet delights. There’s plenty to see and do, but here are nine must-do experiences to get you started.

1. Sip Your Way Through the Vineyards

The Coal River Valley’s cool climate makes it a premier wine region, and the vineyards here are some of Tasmania’s finest. With a glass (or bottle) in hand, take in the scenic views and indulge in long, lazy lunches featuring the best local produce.

Some great cellar doors to visit:

  • Pooley Wines – Join us for in-depth structured tastings, local cheeses and charcuterie boards daily, as well as artisan wood-fired pizzas on weekends.
  • Puddleduck Vineyard – Our cellar door awaits you daily from 10 am to 5 pm, offering customised wine tastings, guided vineyard and winery tours, and a serene deck overlooking the pond and vineyard.
  • Nocton Vineyard – Explore a large range of wines made from expertly grown grape varieties including Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Gamay.
  • Frogmore Creek – Set amongst the vines, Frogmore Creek winery features an award winning Cellar Door, Restaurant and Function Centre all with breathtaking views over the surrounding valley and waterways.
  • Every Man and His Dog Vineyard – This charming winery combines wine production, a cellar door for tastings, lunch and Afternoon Teas and an on-site artisan bean-to-bar chocolate maker, The Federation Chocolate Factory.
  • Caledon Estate – Set amongst the gum trees, overlooking the village of Richmond, the vineyard nestles comfortably amongst its natural environment.
  • Domaine A  – Domaine A is an iconic Australian wine estate. Established in 1973, the historic Stoney Vineyard is the oldest in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. Bookings recommended, walk-ins subject to availability.

2. Picnic by the Historic Richmond Bridge

Built in 1823, Richmond Bridge is Australia’s oldest bridge still in use—a picture-perfect picnic spot.

Pack your picnic with:

After lunch, walk over the bridge and explore the Brinktop Reserve and Richmond Park Track for panoramic views of the Coal River Valley.

3. Step Back in Time in Richmond

Richmond is a living history book with its charming streetscape and convict-built structures.

Must-visit historic sites:

  • Richmond Gaol – Australia’s oldest gaol, dating back to 1825.
  • St Luke’s Church (1834) & St John’s Catholic Church (1837) – Beautiful, historic churches.
  • The Richmond Courthouse (1825) – A well-preserved piece of colonial history in the centre of town.
  • The Old Post Office (1826) – Now home to art galleries and local crafts.

4. Say Cheese! (And Chocolate)

The Coal River Valley is a paradise for cheese and chocolate lovers.

Where to go:

  • Coal River Farm – Try the High Cheese experience: a tiered stand of local cheeses paired with wine.
  • Wicked Cheese – A must-stop for award-winning cheddar, brie, and whiskey-infused cheeses.
  • Federation Artisan Chocolate Richmond – One of their highlights is the chocolate and wine pairing, where they create harmonious combinations using grapes grown on-site.

5. Treasure Hunt in Antique Stores

Richmond is an antique hunter’s dream, with shops packed full of history, rare finds, and vintage treasures.

6. Dine on Local Delights

Richmond was one of Australia’s first food bowls, and today it continues to serve up amazing food.

7. Walk Through a Miniature 1820s Hobart

Step back in time at Old Hobart Town Model Village, a detailed replica of 1820s Hobart.

Situated in the main street of Richmond (Tasmania’s finest Georgian village), this attraction has been built from original plans (over three years) and set out in the streets. As visitors walk the streets of old Hobart, the informative signage tells a story of how and why Hobart was so important to the Australian colonies, it really captures interest and makes for a unique and fascinating tour.

8. Discover Local Art, Craft & Produce at the Market

Every Sunday (10 am – 3 pm), the Richmond Village Market takes over Bridge Street with fresh produce, handmade crafts, and gourmet treats.

Meet local artists, taste regional flavours, and pick up unique souvenirs.

9. Meet the Locals – Big and Small!

For a wild day out, head to ZooDoo Zoo, a family-friendly zoo where you can get up close with Tasmanian devils, meerkats, zebras, and more. Check the daily schedule for feeding times and interactive experiences, and if you’re feeling adventurous, book a hands-on wildlife encounter!

For something a little… different, visit the Pooseum in Richmond. This quirky science museum is dedicated to all things poo (yes, really!). Learn about the fascinating role of animal droppings in ecosystems, explore interactive exhibits, and embrace the endless dad-joke potential. It’s educational, hilarious, and fun for all ages!
