A Dam Good Time: Three Activities Around Strathgordon

[vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text disable_pattern=”true” align=”left” margin_bottom=”0″]

You’ll find Strathgordon on the edge of Tasmania’s World Heritage Wilderness Area, at the very end of the road on the banks of Lake Pedder. Just a 2.5 hour drive from Hobart, this otherworldly spot surrounded by mountain peaks feels far, far away. Camp under the stars or stay in style at Pedder Wilderness Lodge, which was originally built to house Hydro employees working on the Gordon Power Station. Explore the wild surrounds, have some fun by the lakeside, and wander the town to uncover some of the area’s engineering history. Here are our tips on making the most of your time at this special place.

Let’s knock the big one out first, shall we? At 140 metres high, the Gordon Dam is thought to be the highest commercial abseil in the whole world! That’s right, swallow those nerves and strap in for an adrenaline-inducing experience you’ll never forget. It’s a whole lot of fun, and sure does make you appreciate the feeling of having your feet on solid ground! Guaranteed to put hairs on the chest.

The jaw-dropping scenery around Lake Pedder provides the perfect backdrop for some outdoor fun. Kick back at Teds Beach, and if it’s warm enough, have a paddle in the lake. You can also try your luck at fishing – Lake Pedder (and Lake Gordon) offers some of the best trout fishing in Tassie. If you’d like to experience the spectacular landscape from out on the water, glide across the top in a kayak.[vc_column_text disable_pattern=”true” align=”left” margin_bottom=”0″]Explore the surrounding wilderness
The surrounding Southwest National Park is home to some of the most remote wilderness in the world, including strands of rare Huon pine, plus endemic plant and animal species. Be sure to have a gander at the size of the 2,000 year old Huon pine stump at Pedder Wilderness Lodge. There are a range of walks available to immerse yourself in this unique wild world. If you’d like a guide, the passionate fellows at Wild Pedder offer specialty walking and kayaking tours.[vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text disable_pattern=”true” align=”left” margin_bottom=”0″]
