This gallery brings together images captured across the south of the state as the Southern Lights danced overhead. It’s a reminder of just how special our dark skies are, and how lucky we are to witness moments like this right on our doorstep.
The aurora Australis, or Southern Lights, appears when charged particles from the sun collide with Earth’s atmosphere, creating glowing curtains of green, pink and red light. Southern Tasmania sits in a prime position for aurora viewing, especially during strong geomagnetic storms, with minimal light pollution and wide southern horizons.
While sightings are never guaranteed, nights like this show why southern Tasmania has earned a reputation among night sky watchers and astrophotographers alike. Clear skies, patience, and a bit of luck can turn an ordinary evening into something quietly extraordinary.
A huge thank you to the local photographers who headed out into the night and shared what they saw, tagging @hobartandbeyond in their posts. These images are a collective snapshot of a rare Tasmanian moment, captured from many different corners and perspectives. We encourage you to visit and follow the photographers featured on this page.
If you caught the aurora too, keep tagging us. We love seeing southern Tasmania through your lens, especially when the sky decides to steal the show.
