Choose the Scenic Route – Northern Midlands Photo Competition!

Got a camera roll full of country charm, curious wallabies, old sandstone, or those magic skies you only seem to catch on a quiet back road?

The Northern Midlands Council has just launched their Choose the Scenic Route – Photo Competition, and they’re calling on all Tasmanians (yep, that means you!) to share what makes this part of the island special.

Think rolling paddocks, lively markets, quirky local characters, or just the way the late sun hits that old barn near Cressy… whatever makes you pause and reach for your phone or camera, that’s exactly what they want to see.

What’s up for grabs?

The overall winner will take home a $500 cash prize, while the best entry from someone aged 18 or under (as of 1 January 2025) will score a $250 cash prize.

A few things to keep in mind:

Photos must be taken within the Northern Midlands region — check the Council’s map if you’re not sure about the boundaries.

You’ll also need to be a Tasmanian resident to enter. And importantly, all images must be real — no AI-generated shots or heavy digital manipulation allowed.

How to enter:

Entries open on Tuesday 1 July 2025 and close at midnight on Tuesday 30 September 2025. To enter, head to the Northern Midlands Council website and fill out the entry form — emailed entries won’t be accepted.

Each person can submit up to three high-resolution JPEG images (at least 300dpi). With each photo, you’ll need to include a short caption of 50 to 100 words explaining where the photo was taken or what it’s all about.

If you’re entering the Junior category, don’t forget to include your date of birth in the caption field.

This isn’t just about winning — it’s a great excuse to slow down, take the scenic route, and really notice the beauty (and character!) all around you. Whether you’re capturing early fog rolling through Campbell Town, a quirky gatepost near Ross, or a cheeky echidna in the roadside scrub — we reckon you’ve probably already taken “the shot.”

Time to dig it out (or go snap a new one) and show the rest of Tassie what you see.
