Countryside Delights in Tasmania’s south

Southern Tasmania is filled with country delights and it only takes a short drive from Hobart’s CBD to start to discover the rural regions and all their hidden gems. Drive around the countryside, drop into farm stalls for some fresh fruit, dine in traditional country pubs and stay the night in a rural farm stay. Adventures in the country are the perfect way to kick back and relax.

Roadside Stalls

Tasmania does roadside stalls oh-so-well with honesty stalls dotted around the countryside. Meander your way through the regions for in-season fruit and vegetables and home-baked goodies. We have listed some of the more prominent farm stalls but keep your eyes peeled on your next adventure as there are many more you will find along the way. Be sure to have cash for the stall and please be honest and respectful to the farmer!

  • Longley Organic Farm: This quaint farmgate provides certified organic seasonal vegies, berries, raw honey, homemade jams, flowers, dried herbs, teas, and native pepperberries as well as veggie patch supplies such as plants and potting mixes. 1690 Huon Rd, Longley.
  • Provenance Growers: A market garden and edible plant nursery, Provenance provides produce, edible plants and preserves to home cooks, chefs and gardeners. Their roadside stall is located in Neika.
  • Willie Smith’s Apples: Call into the Apple Shed for a meal or pick up some apples from the roadside fridges on your journey through the Huon Valley.  2064 Huon Hwy, Grove.
  • Griggs Apples: Visitors can drop into Griggs and pick a bag of their homegrown Rubigold Apple, a variety unique to the farm. 2873 Huon Hwy, Huonville.
  • Scott Brothers Apples:  An apple stall stocking in-season apples and other local fruits. 322 Scotts Rd, Cairns Bay.
  • Campo De Flori Boutique Farm: The farm grows and sells saffron along with lavender and olives. It is also a lovely pottery studio. 184 Lanes Rd, Glen Huon.
  • Little Black Fridge: A roadside stall filled with freshly baked goods – think cookies, cakes and fresh sourdough. 9 Britcliffes Road, Geeveston.
  • Kymmik Cottage: Stocks farm fresh eggs, flowers, jams and homemade soaps. 143 Fourfoot Road, Geeveston.
  • Whispering Spirit Farm Stall: Features beautiful homemade jams, cheesecakes, breads and berries. 53 Swamp Rd, Franklin.
  • Ashcraig Farm: Stocking fresh seasonal fresh fruit, vegetables and healthy seedlings. 1648 Nicholls Rivulet Rd, Nicholls Rivulet.
  • Lucaston Park Orchards: Lucaston stall offers apples and other in-season fruit, apple juice and jams. 26 Lucaston Rd, Lucaston.
  • Valleyfield Farm Stall: The ideal stop for raspberries and homemade blackcurrant juice. 708 Glen Huon Rd, Glen Huon.
  • The Bruny Baker:  The very photogenic vintage fridge is perched beside the road features freshly baked sourdough bread, cookies, and slices. Corner of Sheepwash Road and Main Road, Bruny Island.
  • Bruny Island Market Garden:  This great little stall sells organically grown seasonal vegetables. Killora Road, Bruny Island.
  • Soyoyoy Foods: Selling fresh tofu, plant-based cheeses and decadent mousse. Ferry Rd Kettering.
  • Forage Flowers: Locally sourced and seasonal flowers picked fresh. Corner of Acton Rd and Cilwen Rd, Cambridge.
  • Tasmanian Kitchen Pantry: A great selection of sweet and savoury preserves and fresh vegetables.  505 Colebrook Rd, Campania.
  • The Spud Shed: A small family farm offering fresh pinkeye potatoes and raspberries from late December. 146 Fingerpost Rd, Campania.
  • Bream Creek Community Market Garden: Offers a fridge full of milk, fresh vegetables, herbs and eggs. 245 Burnt Hill Rd, Bream Creek.

Pick Your Own

Meet the makers and get out amongst the paddocks with a pick-your-own adventure. Bring the kids and enjoy a family day out. Please be aware that pick-your-own experiences are only available during the harvest seasons, please check ahead before visiting the farms. 

  • The Westerway Raspberry Farm in the Derwent Valley offers a range of berries to pick over the season including; strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries. Their Farm Gate Shop is also open throughout Berry Season (Dec-March).
  • Coal River Farm allows guests to take a stroll through their farm where fruits such as strawberries, cherries, apricots and plums grow. The farm’s pick your own fruit will be available for the 2021/22 fruit season. If you miss out on the pick-your-own season, be sure to visit their on-site restaurant and chocolate shop!
  • The Sorrell Fruit Farm is just a 25-minute drive east of Hobart. The farm has a broad range of fruits available to pick yourself including berries, Nashi pears, peaches and cherries. There is an onsite cafe available and the team also make some tasty liqueurs from their fruits.
  • Littlewood Berry Farm also offers a strawberry picking experience and can be found along Richmond Road in the Coal River Valley. The site also offers real fruit ice cream, jams, sauces, honey, Strawberry Jam Gin and Strawberry Liqueur.

Farm Stays

Enjoy some good old-fashioned country hospitality with a unique farm stay and immerse yourself in the rural way of life. Tasmanian farm stays allow you to get to know the land and experience the life of a working farm. It is also a fantastic way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy some wide-open spaces. 

  • Home to some of the cutest highland cattle you will ever see, Highland Getaway is a luxury farm stay in the Huon Valley. A working farm breeding Highland Cattle, Highlands Getaway gives guests the opportunity to enjoy a farm tour and give the local fluffy cattle a brush! The farm also has some inquisitive alpacas and fluffy silkie chickens to keep guests entertained.
  • Overlooking the picturesque Meadowbank Lake, Curringa Farm is an award-winning farm stay located on a 750-acre working sheep farm. Guests can take part in a two-hour farm tour to see a sheep shearing demonstration, working farm dogs rounding up the sheep, an escorted forest walk and enjoy in-depth conversations about crops and landcare.
  • 28 Gates Luxury Farmstay and Fishery is nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Derwent Valley, approximately a one-hour drive from Hobart. Fly fishing aficionados can enjoy access to three private lakes stocked with Wild Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, and Tiger Trout. There are also a range of other activities to enjoy including wilderness walks, feeding the farm animals, nighttime wildlife tours, and photography tours. 
  • Set on the outskirts of Cygnet, Eden Farm Stay is a 40 acre farm set up to accommodate families with plenty of space and creature comforts. The farm, once used for apple production, now features small orchards and paddocks with a variety of friendly farm animals. Guests can pick their own fruit, feed the animals and enjoy the lovely surrounds.
  • Kymmik Cottage is a luxury cottage nestled on a private acreage surrounded by Scott’s Rivulet – just outside the forestry town of Geeveston in the Huon Valley. The perfect place to enjoy some green time Kymmik guests will also enjoy visits from the local farm animals, including the miniature donkey and miniature horse named Donkey and Chester.
  • Whispering Spirit Holiday Cottages and Miniature Pony Stud is situated in the lush green hills of the Huon Valley at Franklin. Guests can switch off in the cozy cottages and experience the farm life by meeting the local miniature ponies and feeding the chooks.
  • Ratho Farm, set in the rural town of Bothwell in Tasmania’s highlands, is a farm stay, event venue and is also home to Australia’s oldest golf course. The Ratho accommodation consists of restored farm buildings and convict cottages where guests can enjoy a beautiful blend of modern comforts and rustic, historical details. 
  • Rathmore House in the Derwent Valley is a historic sheep property settled in 1828, offering elegant heritage and rustic chic accommodation. The property features shearers quarters and a rustic cottage for guests to experience. Kids will love spotting the resident platypus and getting to know the farm animals.
  • Maydena Mountain Cabins provides a great base from which to get out and explore the World Heritage Wilderness, Mt Field National Park and Maydena Bike Park, and at the same time enjoy a beautiful rural setting complete with a friendly herd of alpacas to greet you on your return each day.

    Explore the area’s unique natural attractions during the day, then in the evening relax in one of our beautiful self-contained traditional timber cabins and soak up the breathtaking views across the gardens, surrounding forest and often winter snow-capped Mt Field National Park mountains beyond.  See our five adorable alpaca girls who live in the fields next to your cabin, take memorable photos and rejuvenate in nature breathing some of the cleanest air in the world.  

Country Pubs

A hearty meal, friendly country hospitality, and a glass of your favourite beverage in hand – there is nothing like enjoying the down-to-earth atmosphere of a country pub. Head out for the weekend or enjoy a mid-week adventure and get to know the local publicans. It is also best to check ahead for current opening times and reservation requirements.

  • Featuring live music, cold drinks and a memorable beer garden, the Longley International Hotel is a hot spot for locals seeking a cool ale in summer or a warming dram in winter. Claiming to have the longest Huon Pine bar in the world, this pub in the bush is also famous for its appearances on ABC’s hit comedy, Rosehaven. 
  • When touring the Channel and Bruny Island, be sure to drop into The Oyster Cove Inn. Perched atop the hill at Kettering and overlooking Bruny and North West Bay, the Oyster Cove Inn is the perfect spot to enjoy a delicious meal in the large outdoor area.
  • The town of Oatlands is filled with rural delights and when travelling along the Heritage Highway, a meal at the Kentish Tasmania is a must.  Built-in 1832 this historic country pub has undergone recent updates and serves up delicious meals and the best coffee in town.
  • Serving up pub classics along with fresh local seafood, Hotel Bruny is a great place to visit when on Bruny Island. Fuel up after a day of exploring, sip a drink on the deck, or in the wintertime, enjoy a seat beside the fire with a mug of warm Bruny Island cider.
  • Situated at the picturesque town of Cygnet the Port Cygnet Cannery, formerly an apple canning factory, is now a delightful pub/restaurant serving up wood-fired pizzas on a Thursday and Friday and a rotating farm dinner on Saturday nights.
  • The recently refurbished Kermandie Hotel serves traditional hearty, pub classic meals. Located in Port Huon in the beautiful Huon Valley region, Kermandie is the ideal spot to enjoy a relaxing lunch or dinner.
  • Visit the heritage town of Richmond, just 25-minutes from Hobart, and enjoy some time at the Richmond Arms. Located in Richmond’s historic main street, the Richmond Arms serves up tasty pub classics and wine from the surrounding Coal River Valley wine region.
  • For the ultimate country pub feel in the Tasmanian wilderness, follow the Lyell Highway to the Derwent Bridge Wilderness Hotel. Serving all your pub favourites by a large open fireplace, the Derwent Bridge is uber-cosy – the perfect way to warm up after exploring the central highlands or trekking the Overland Track. Or turn left onto Gordon River Road and head west to Maydena to the splendid Giants’ Table which not only boasts a cosy and inviting pub with all your favourite country fare 7 days a week, but also has eight self-contained cottages of varying sizes and configurations to suit any travel party, complete with farm animals all around and several resident platypi.
