Tucked between the CBD and Sandy Bay, Fitzroy Gardens feels like a secret locals have been keeping to themselves. The gardens sit pretty on Hobart’s “dress circle”, Fitzroy Place, where elegant mansions watch over the park like grand old guardians. It’s that perfect spot where the city meets suburbia, where morning joggers share paths with wedding parties and where your dog can actually run free (at the right times, mind you).

Don’t let the manicured lawns fool you, Fitzroy Gardens has quite the backstory. This picturesque patch started life as something far less glamorous: a landfill site. By the early 1900s, visionary park planner John Lipscombe (who also designed St David’s Park) saw potential where others saw rubbish and transformed the area into the gardens we see today.
The park’s unique arrow-like shape isn’t accidental, it’s a clever piece of landscape design that maximises both the sloping terrain and the views across to the Derwent River. Those magnificent mature elm trees you’ll spot throughout the gardens? They’ve been providing shade and shelter for generations of Hobart families, making this one of the city’s most established green spaces.
Location, Location, Location
Positioned at the intersection of Hobart, Sandy Bay, and Dynnyrne, Fitzroy Gardens offers the best of all worlds. You’re minutes from the CBD, a short stroll from Sandy Bay’s cafes, and perfectly placed to explore South Hobart’s hidden gems.
A Playground Paradise
The recently upgraded children’s playground is a real drawcard for families. Compact but cleverly designed, it features modern equipment set amongst those beautiful mature trees. It’s fully fenced too, so the little ones can run wild while you actually relax for a moment.
Dog Paradise (With Rules)
This is one of Hobart’s most dog-friendly spaces, with off-leash hours from 7pm to 9am during daylight saving time, and from 3pm to 9am during winter months. Your four-legged mate will love the open grass areas and shaded pathways, while you’ll appreciate the provided doggy bag dispensers and bins.
Wedding Magic
Those towering elm trees create natural cathedral aisles that have made Fitzroy Gardens a favourite for intimate weddings and celebrations. The mature trees provide both drama and intimacy – perfect for couples wanting something special without the fuss of a formal venue.

For the Peace and Quiet
In a city that’s increasingly busy, Fitzroy Gardens offers genuine tranquillity. The sloping lawns and established trees create natural sound barriers, making this an ideal spot for a proper break from urban life.
For the Seasons
Spring brings magnificent blossoms, while autumn transforms the deciduous trees into a spectacular display of gold and orange. Each season offers something different, making this a year-round destination.
For the Facilities
Public toilets (including accessible facilities), picnic tables, barbecue spots, and plenty of seating mean you can spend a proper chunk of time here without heading home every hour.
For the Exercise
The gardens’ tiered design means you’ll get a gentle workout just wandering around. The walking tracks wind through different levels, offering varied terrain and lovely views.
Best accessed via Digney Street or Fitzroy Crescent, the gardens offer convenient parking and are easily walkable from South Hobart’s shops and cafes. Pop across the road to check out the famous blue slide playground at Parliament Street Reserve – it’s become something of a local legend.
For the full South Hobart experience, combine your gardens visit with a wander through the surrounding streets. The area’s rich with architectural gems and local eateries that perfectly complement a lazy afternoon in the gardens.
Fitzroy Gardens proves that sometimes the best experiences are the ones hiding in plain sight. It’s not trying to be anything other than what it is – a beautiful, functional green space where locals have been gathering for generations. In a world of Instagram-worthy attractions and must-see lists, there’s something beautifully refreshing about a place that simply invites you to sit, breathe, and be present.
