Knit for Jim: A Community Knitting Project with a Twist

Wrap up winter in Ross with a hands-on community project full of colour, charm and creativity.

There’s something a bit woolly going on at the Tasmanian Wool Centre in Ross this winter—and you’re invited to be part of it.

Meet Jim the Door Ram. He’s a sturdy sort of fellow who guards the entrance to the Wool Centre year-round. But when winter rolls into Ross, even the toughest ram needs a bit of extra warmth. That’s where you come in.

What is Knit for Jim?

Knit for Jim is a delightfully quirky community knitting project with a simple goal: knit the longest, cosiest, most colourful scarf this side of the Midlands—and wrap it around Jim! Whether you’re a seasoned stitcher or have never touched a needle, everyone is welcome to pick up the wool and add a few rows to Jim’s ever-growing winter wear.

This isn’t just about knitting—it’s about connection, creativity, and sharing a moment of calm in a beautiful heritage setting. Think of it as a warm hug from the community, one stitch at a time.

How it works

The event runs for the whole winter, from June through August, and it’s absolutely free. Drop-ins are welcome during open hours, but if you fancy a guaranteed spot in the cosy knitting nook, booking ahead is your best bet. Sessions are self-directed and perfect for duos or solo knitters looking for a relaxing experience indoors.

Bookings are limited to two people per timeslot, and available on select weekdays only—just to help the team keep everything running smoothly. And if you book but can’t make it, a quick cancellation helps the community project keep growing without a hitch.
