From the moment you step onto the trail, you’re immersed in a world of ferns, trickling water, and soft, dappled light filtering through the canopy. The well-formed path follows the creek, offering occasional glimpses of small cascades and pools along the way. In the right conditions, fungi of all shapes and colours appear along the track, adding to the rainforest’s magic.
The track itself is relatively easy, making it suitable for most walkers. It’s a great option for families or those looking for a gentle nature experience. While the path once led to a waterfall, the current maintained section ends after about a kilometre. Walkers should not proceed past this point, as the unmaintained trail beyond is rough and can be unsafe, particularly in wet conditions.
The Mavista Rainforest Walking Track is about a 40-minute (40km) drive from the Sealink Bruny Island Ferry terminal at Roberts Point. After disembarking, follow Lennon Road and merge onto Bruny Island Main Road for approximately 30km. Turn left onto Adventure Bay Road, travel 8km, then take a right onto Lockleys Road. From there, follow Resolution Road for 300 metres to reach the Mavista Picnic Area, where the walk begins.
Bruny Island’s roads include unsealed sections, but they are generally suitable for 2WD vehicles and bicycles in fine weather.
Before or after your walk, the Mavista Picnic Area provides a sheltered spot to rest and refuel. It’s a great place to enjoy a packed lunch, surrounded by towering trees and birdsong.
The maintained track is an easy return walk of about 2km.
The unmaintained section beyond the official end is not recommended.
The rainforest can be damp and muddy, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
Respect the environment by staying on the designated path and leaving no trace.
The Mavista Rainforest Walking Track is a reminder of why Bruny Island is such a special place. It’s an accessible way to experience the island’s cool-temperate rainforest and a peaceful contrast to the island’s dramatic coastlines. Whether you’re seeking a quiet moment in nature or a new spot for photography, this short but rewarding walk is well worth a visit.
