Navigation: Home / Places / Tasman Peninsula / Guide to Visiting Port Arthur Historic Site
Today, the peninsula’s epic scenery and rugged beauty attract visitors worldwide. Back in the 19th century, it was a different story; the giant sea cliffs, thick forest, and surrounding ocean made it an ideal spot for a prison.
Escape was near impossible from such an isolated place, but today you might not want to leave. Exploring this World Heritage-listed Convict Site should be high on your to-do list.
Don’t forget to pre-purchase your entry tickets online.
The Port Arthur Historic Site is huge, and there’s a lot to see. Your site entry is valid for two consecutive days, so we recommend staying overnight in the Tasman Peninsula area to ensure you get the most from your visit.
Explore over 40 hectares of open land, historic buildings, ruins, restored houses, heritage gardens and walking trails.
Wear comfortable shoes and layered clothing, as the weather can change quickly on the Peninsula.
Port Arthur Historic Site offers numerous tours and experiences for all ages.
Your entry ticket to the site includes a 25-minute Harbour Cruise and entry to the Port Arthur Interpretation Gallery, which features interactive exhibits and displays.
Some of the popular tours include: Escape From Port Arthur, Isle Of The Dead Cemetery Tour, Convict Tour, Wheel Of Fate and the popular Port Arthur Ghost Tour (limited availability, Wednesday to Sunday).
A few simple preparations before you visit will make sure your time at the Port Arthur Historic Site is the best it can be.
While you will explore a number of intact buildings during your visit, many of our historic ruins are without roofs, and most of your visit will be spent outdoors.
The site’s coastal location means we can experience sudden weather changes, so make sure you’re prepared for sun, rain, wind, cold and warmth!
