Discover charming heritage buildings, sweet local flavours, and hidden gems

Perth Tasmania

Perth, Tasmania: A Heritage Highway Gem

Situated just 20 minutes south of Launceston, Perth is a Georgian-era town that has retained much of its 19th-century charm. With over 40 historic buildings, it’s a living museum for architecture enthusiasts.

Often overlooked by travellers speeding down the Midland Highway between Hobart and Launceston, Perth Tasmania is quietly making its mark as one of the Heritage Highway’s most rewarding stop-offs. With over 40 heritage-listed buildings, scenic rural views, and some delicious local finds, it’s the kind of place where you’ll want to slow down, stretch your legs, and soak it all in.

Historic Walks Through the Past

Take yourself on a self-guided heritage walk through the town’s historic centre, where Georgian architecture lines the streets and every stone building has a story to tell. Pick up a National Trust brochure from the local post office and wind your way past 19th-century cottages, churches, and shopfronts that have stood the test of time.

Must-sees include the 1839 Baptist Church and the Gothic Revival-style St Andrews Anglican Church. Keep an eye out for old signage, quirky iron lacework, and sandstone detailing – this is real-deal Tasmanian heritage.

Taste of the Region: Honey, Spirits & More

No visit to Perth is complete without dropping in to the Tasmanian Honey Company, located right in town. Their leatherwood honey is world-renowned, harvested from Tasmania’s wild forests. Pop in for a tasting and a chat – the team know their bees!

A few minutes south of town, Adams Distillery is turning heads with its award-winning small-batch spirits. The gin selection includes a crowd favourite: blueberry and lavender. Their whisky isn’t half bad either – and the tasting room is well worth a visit for the views alone.

Classic Car Enthusiasts

One of the more unexpected attractions in Perth Tasmania is Exclusive Cars, a classic and luxury car showroom right on the main road. Whether you’re into vintage Jaguars, muscle cars, or gleaming modern beauties, it’s a feast for the eyes. Great for a browse, or a bit of car-spotting with a takeaway coffee in hand.

Scenic Views

Perth offers postcard-perfect views of Tasmania’s rural heartland. Look west for sweeping vistas of the Great Western Tiers, especially striking in the late afternoon light. There are quiet spots by the South Esk River too, perfect for a picnic or just a moment of calm between destinations.

Café Culture with Country Charm

Need a caffeine top-up? Perth has some lovely local cafés perfect for a pit stop. Grab a seat at one of the historic buildings-turned-cafés, enjoy a freshly baked scone, and take in the peaceful, small-town Tassie atmosphere. Some even have hidden courtyards out the back—ideal for those slower moments on a road trip.
