In 2005, Greg Duncan embarked on an artistic journey unlike any other, with the goal of immortalizing the trials, triumphs, and spirit of the Highlanders who shaped the region. The Wall is a testament to the perseverance of the individuals who settled and protected the Highlands, and its panels capture their stories in intricate detail.
What sets The Wall in the Wilderness apart is its medium: rare Huon pine, a highly prized Tasmanian timber known for its rich colour and longevity. Duncan carves each metre of The Wall over the course of a month, with the timber’s natural beauty enhancing the realism of his sculptures. His creations include lifelike depictions of thylacines, forester kangaroos, and horses, each painstakingly crafted to evoke the region’s untamed wildlife and the enduring relationship between humans and nature.
The relief carvings on The Wall take visitors on a journey through time, depicting not just the region’s wildlife but the hardship and perseverance of the people who worked the land. From early settlers battling the harsh environment to modern conservationists striving to preserve the area’s beauty, Duncan’s work captures the unique spirit of the Central Highlands. His dedication to historical accuracy and artistic realism makes The Wall a captivating experience for all who visit.
There’s nothing quite like The Wall anywhere else in Australia. Duncan’s masterful artistry, the luminous beauty of Huon pine, and immersive storytelling combine to make it a must-see for art lovers and history enthusiasts alike. Visitors to Derwent Bridge will be struck not only by the scale of the project but also by the emotion and effort infused into every inch of the artwork.
Whether you’re an art aficionado, a history buff, or simply curious about Tasmania’s cultural heritage, The Wall in the Wilderness offers a world-class experience that speaks to the heart of Tasmania’s wilderness and its people.
