Turn On The Stars

Southern Tasmania and Beaker Street Night Sky Initiative

Turn On The Stars 2024 – This August, southern Tasmanian businesses will be dimming their lights to brighten our skies.

August provides the perfect opportunity to embrace the longer winter nights, venture outdoors after dark, and capture the stunning beauty of our southern aurora, Milky Way, and night sky.

The “Turn On The Stars” initiative, collaborating with the Beaker Street Festival, aims to reduce light pollution across Hobart and Southern Tasmania. By doing so, it transforms the region into a standout destination, not just during the day but also by night. View participating businesses.

Why Reducing Light Pollution Matters

Reducing light pollution has numerous benefits beyond enhancing stargazing:

  • Health: Excessive artificial light can disrupt our sleep patterns and negatively impact our overall health. By reducing light pollution, we promote better sleep and well-being.
  • Wildlife: Many animals rely on natural light cycles for navigation, reproduction, and feeding. Minimizing artificial light helps protect these vital behaviors and supports local ecosystems.
  • Energy Costs: Lowering light usage conserves energy, which not only reduces costs but also helps mitigate climate change.
  • Atmosphere: Soft, warm lighting creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making our evenings more enjoyable and relaxing.
