In southern Tasmania it doesn’t really matter whether you love trekking into the wilds, sipping on a crisp Riesling or venturing deep into an underground museum; we have a little something for everyone. With short travel time between adventures, it’s tempting to base yourself in Hobart and head out for day trips, but if you have the time, nothing beats getting out into the regions for some overnight stays and really taking the time to immerse yourself in the peace, beauty and restorative qualities of our quaint towns.
Head south of Hobart and in just 20 minutes you’ll find yourself in the Huon Valley where green hillsides, boutique vineyards, and roadside stalls dot the landscape. The Huon is well known for its fruit, veggies, wine, and cider. With its strong maritime links, you’ll also find rugged coastlines along the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, smooth-flowing rivers, and World Heritage Wilderness for those willing to explore the far south. No trip is complete without a hop across to Bruny Island so be sure to set aside plenty of time for this region.
The Tasman Peninsula is perhaps best known for the Port Arthur Historic Site, yet there is plenty more to discover on a trip down this way. The spectacular coastline lends itself to temperate diving at Eaglehawk Neck, surfing, sea kayaking, and bushwalking along rocky capes. Top it all off with an exquisite local whisky or gin.
If you want to delve into more Tasmanian heritage, the Heritage Highway through the Southern Midlands is your path. Stories of bushrangers, road gangs, and early entrepreneurs are still very much alive in the villages and across the midland landscape.
The Derwent Valley brims with plenty of surprises. With natural wonders such as the upper Derwent River, the Sentinel Ranges and Mt Field National Park, adventurers will be in heaven, but so too will gourmands, as they discover the beer, wine, and food of this abundant region.
If winter snow, trout fishing, and alpine bushwalking is your gig, keep heading north to the Central Highlands, where the highland lakes are waiting to welcome you.
