Set in 1833, Sophia Degraves of Cascades Brewery meets her husbands friends and foes in a 40-minute play. Traveller and diarist, Edward Markham, visited the Degraves family one Sunday in 1833 having arrived from Europe the night before. Compressing the events of several years, Sophia Degraves introduces Markham to her husband’s friends and foes: Captain Hugh MacIntosh of the East India Company, Naval Officer Captain Cowen, Colonial Newspaper man, R.L. Murray, Captain Kermack of the Hope, Bushranger Matthew Brady and various inhabitants of Colonial Hobart.
Stage whispers had this to say: This is a tightly crafted, emotionally charged piece of theatre.
Anne’s portrayal of Sophia is so finely drawn, delicate yet strong, that the audience is drawn into and buffeted by her story.
James Colbourn-Keogh – whose powerful voice, stagecraft and adaptability belies his youth. At only 18 years, James is destined for big things. With a striking presence on stage, James introduces an array of characters.
