5 bakeries to try along the Heritage Highway

A trip along the Heritage Highway through Tasmania’s Midlands isn’t complete without popping into the local bakeries along the way. Treat yourself to the nostalgic smell of a freshly baked pie, sausage roll or vanilla slice made fresh each day in anyone one of these iconic local institutions. You won’t regret it!

1. Ingleside Bakery

Located in the quaint town of Evandale, Ingleside Bakery is a delightful spot to enjoy a cuppa and pastry. If the weather permits, make sure to sit in the secret garden styled courtyard outside.

2. Rustic Bakehouse Cressy

Quickly becoming a cult-favourite, locals and visitors are travelling from far and wide to bite into one of the epic doughnuts at Rustic Bakehouse. For something more substantial, their Friday night pizza’s are also a crowd-pleaser.

3. Ross Village Bakery

Operating for over 100 years, the Ross Village Bakery is renowned for making the ‘World’s Greatest Vanilla Slice’ and it definitely doesn’t disappoint. It might have something to do with the unique, semi-scotch brick wood-fired oven which has the capacity to bake up to 300 loaves at a time!

4. Bakery 31

Also located in the town of Ross, Bakery 31 is the go-to spot for a classic Tasmanian scallop pie. They also offer all-day breakfast and hearty meals like their signature Lamb Fry and Bacon.

5. JJ’s Bakery

Beginning from a small shop front in the convict built, heritage listed “Emerald Mill” building in Longford, JJ’s Bakery has grown from its humble origins to become a well-known staple within the Northern Midlands. Since first opening in 1989, JJ’s Bakery has expanded to include locations in Longford, Campbell Town and Launceston.   Hero Image: @rusticbakehouse
