Foodies, it’s time to get your hands dirty. Put your money where your mouth is (literally) and book yourself into one of Southern Tasmania’s cooking classes or schools. Some of them are home to local celebs, which we reckon equals serious bragging rights about who taught you that dish at your next dinner party.

1. The Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School & Farm

The Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School & Farm offers hands-on, paddock-to-plate cooking experiences in a 19th century schoolhouse in the Derwent Valley (a 45 minute drive from Hobart). Cooking classes on the five acre farm are lead by Rodney Dunn, former Food Editor of Australian Gourmet Traveller magazine, as well as a supporting cast of Tasmanian cooks and producers. Cooking classes utilise homegrown heirloom varieties of fruit, vegetables and rare breed animals, as well as ingredients from local farmers, fishermen, gardeners and artisan producers. If you’d like to sample the dishes separately from the cooking school, dine in at The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery down the road in New Norfolk.

2. Sally Wise Cooking School

Join bestselling cookbook author and regular ABC guest Sally Wise for a hands-on experience at her cooking school near Molesworth in the Derwent Valley. The Sally Wise Cooking School utilises Tasmania’s fresh seasonal produce, with tastings and a generous morning tea included (best not to eat too much beforehand). Choose from a fabulous range of classes, with topics including: making and baking yeast goods, vegan cooking, easy cheese making, Spanish cooking, family favourites, preserves, and slow cooking.

3. The Farmhouse Kitchen

Join mother-daughter team Giuliana and Genevieve at The Farmhouse Kitchen, a delightful cooking school nestled in the scenic Huon Valley (around a 1-hour drive south from Hobart). Take your taste buds on a journey through Puglia, in Southern Italy—one of the best examples of the Mediterranean Diet (which is known for longevity, so this class might just extend your lifespan). Choose from their range of small and personal masterclasses and mini-classes in their bright, home-style kitchen. Learn to cook Italian style: by sharing stories, flavours, methods and laughter around the kitchen table.

4. Fat Pig Farm

Fat Pig Farm is located at Glaziers Bay in the Huon Valley, and is home to Gourmet Farmer Matthew Evans and Sadie Chestman. Their cookery school is a hands-on workshop experience, run over one or two days. Tour the farm, visit the friendly Wessex Saddleback pigs and raid the garden, then haul the bounty back to the kitchen to cook it all up into a scrumptious feast (yes, you do get to devour it). On Fridays, Fat Pig Farm host a leisurely long table lunch where they cook for you. They also team up with Yukon Tours for special Fat Pig Farm Afloat experiences.
