If you’re fond of a tipple, taste your way through Southern Tasmania’s lovingly crafted local brews. We don’t want to throw around words like ‘authentic’ and ’boutique’ and ‘life-changing’ willy-nilly, but if the shoe fits…

Drink in these tips on where to find some very hip tipples. Oh, and barkeep, keep ’em coming!

1. Moorilla Winery

Discover the best of the old and the new at Moorilla. There’s a little museum attached to this one that you might have heard of: Mona – Museum of Old and New Art. Enjoy Moorilla wines at Mona’s hip bars, restaurants, cafe, luxury pavilions, and eclectic festivals.

Moorilla makes small-batch, cool-climate wines from estate-grown fruit. There are three distinct series: Praxis (fresh, bold and fruit-driven), Muse (wines with complexity and rich cellar potential) and Cloth Label (French-inspired artisanal vineyard blends).

2. Frogmore Creek

Get your favourite people together, head to Frogmore Creek, and indulge in a few glasses (or bottles—best not to drive!) of their exceptional cool-climate wines. Frogmore Creek’s Cellar Door, Restaurant and Function Centre is a stunning building set amongst the vines, just a 20 minute drive from Hobart (or a short detour from the Hobart International Airport). Enjoy a fancy lunch created with top quality local produce, sip their range of premium wines, and gaze out at the picturesque views of the Coal River Valley.

On the Hobart waterfront, The Lounge by Frogmore Creek is open every night for dinner, featuring an a la carte that balances international flavours with Tasmanian produce. Find this hip restaurant and bar in the MACq 01 building.

3. Cascade Brewery

Discover Australia’s oldest brewery nestled among the scenic foothills of kunanyi/Mt Wellington in South Hobart. All that experience is put to good use—the expert brewers at Cascade Brewery combine traditional skills, pure mountain water, and premium Tassie barley and hops to create the beloved Cascade range.

Take a brewery tour to see all aspects of the beer-making process and taste the range of beers and alcoholic apple ciders. The former brewery manager’s house has been transformed into the Cascade Visitors Centre, so eat and drink to your heart’s content whilst enjoying gorgeous views of the brewery and Heritage-listed gardens.

4. Domaine A / Stoney Vineyard

Comb your hair flat and stand up straight—this one is pretty fancy! Domaine A is an iconic Australian wine estate with an outstanding reputation. Stoney Vineyard (est. 1973) is the oldest in the beautiful Coal River Valley wine region.

The pristine natural environment—with its ancient soil, cheerful rays of sunshine, and cool climate—gives rise to inspirational terroir founded on 200 million year old Jurassic dolerite. The wines are of exemplary quality with genuine ageing capacity and boast a strong record of critical acclaim. If you fancy yourself a posh collector, you’ll want to stash a bottle of Domaine A Cabernet Sauvignon in your cellar.

5. Lark Distillery

Adventurous whisky drinkers, pop into the warm and inviting Lark Cellar Door & Whisky Bar to share a drink, have a chat, and spark ideas. The bar is located on the historic Hobart waterfront and has a wide range of premium malt whiskies and other distilled spirits, plus a selection of Tasmanian beer, wine and cider, coffee and cheese platters.

Lark Single Malt Whiskies reflect the Tasmanian landscape and pioneering spirit of its people. They are double-distilled in locally crafted copper-pot stills and aged in small casks, then bottled and labelled by hand in the heart of the Coal River Valley.

6. Pagan Cider

Pagan Cider boasts the southern-most cider cellar door in Australia and the only one set in a working cherry orchard. Enjoy free tastings of this boutique producer’s flagship range of apple, pear, and cherry ciders in their intimate tasting room in the Huon Valley.

The fruit used is lovingly grown by local farmers and crafted into elegant, sparkling and modern tipples. Discover exquisite and exclusive limited release seasonal blends such as quince, blueberry, strawberry and peach. The ciders achieve rare clarity and balance—something we can all aspire to (I really must go back to yoga).
