The eighth annual MONA FOMA (Mofo) festival is upon as again and promises to be bigger and better than ever before. MONA’s summer festival of music and art is curated by Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes and The Break fame and promises to be a “sensory discombobulation to shake you down to your very cell structure”.
Acts such as the Flaming Lips and DJ Krush will keep the crowds rocking with a mix of other entertainment throughout Hobart over the six day festival which runs from the 13th January – 18th January 2016. Here are three performances and experiences we will be checking out ourselves this year:
Birdman Live – Thu 14 Jan , 8pm – Odeon Theatre – Tickets $25-$50 + booking fee
This is going to be a cracking show! If you’ve seen Birdman, you know it’s a bit of a strange film that gets you thinking, plus there’s always a musical score in the background, with the shot panning past the band at multiple intervals. For Mona Foma, the score will be played LIVE as a backing to the movie – how cool is that? If you haven’t seen the film, it’s totally worth getting along to so you can experience it on the big screen.
Faux Mo – Fri 15 – Sun 17 Jan , 9pm – late – 12 Murray Street (ex-Government Offices) – Tickets $30 + booking fee
The Mona Foma after party is always the place to be, but this year is different. What do you think would happen if someone gave the Mona Foma team a vacated formerly government building to work with that will be totally renovated after the festival? A building they can do anything they want with internally? No idea? Me neither, but it’s going to be great fun finding out!
Beckett Triptych – Thur 14 – Sat 16, 7.30pm – Theatre Royal – Tickets from $38.25
A trio of disturbing, darkly funny Samuel Beckett plays: Eh Joe, Footfalls and Krapp’s Last Tape. Dark, dreamlike, disturbing, but also heavily musical, the three plays will be an experience that harks perfectly to the feel of the Mona Foma festival overall.
MONA’s creative team really know how to organise a festival, so Mofo this year is guaranteed to be one that will create an impression. See you out there!
