Hobart and beyond comes alive over summer with an exciting range of vibrant festivals, eclectic events, and amazing discovery programs. We’ve put together some tips on fun things to do this summer.

These activities are all family friendly, so take the kids (unless you’d prefer to leave your little angels with their grandparents for some ‘special bonding time’).

1. The Taste of Tasmania

When: 28 December 2018 – 3 January 2019
Where: Princes Wharf, Salamanca Place, Hobart
Cost: Free entry (except after 3pm NYE & SMEG Culinary Kitchen), tickets to premium events via the Theatre Royal

The Taste of Tasmania is celebrating the big 3-0 this year and we are all invited to the party! As well as the mouthwatering array of flavoursome local dishes, award-winning wine and boutique brews, there are some ripper premium events on.

Enjoy a variety of workshops, The Great Tasmanian Cake Off, a Pop Up Beer Fest, a Tasmanian Bush Tucker Tour, stellar live music and entertainment, and of course New Year’s Eve! Party like it’s 1928 at the NYE Speakeasy Ball, with an awesome musical lineup including Tex Perkins, Ella Hooper and Monique Brumby, swing dance lessons, a burlesque performance by Zelia Rose, and more.

2. The Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race

When: 26 December – approx. 31 December 2018
Where: Watch the yachts glide up the Derwent River
Cost: Free to watch

The Taste of Tasmania provides the perfect lookout for welcoming the competitors of what is widely considered to be the world’s most gruelling and difficult ocean yacht race. For those wanting to get up close to the planet’s yachting heroes on the water, Hobart Yachts and SailTas are running sailing tours to see the boats come up the river, or a Pennicott Wilderness Journeys’ Iron Pot Cruise offers a pretty good chance of seeing a yacht on approach to the finish line on the 28th or 29th. If you’re keen to see the race in rock star style, Hobart’s latest tourism experience Above and Beyond Seaplane flies out of Kings Pier on the Hobart waterfront, or Par Avion and Rotorlift can help out with chopper rides.

This year’s epic lineup includes Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Vance Joy, Chvrches, Hilltop Hoods, Amy Shark, and even ‘Africa’ legends Toto. As well as music, enjoy a wide range of food and drink, art and craft stalls, and eclectic activities. 4. MyState Australian Wooden Boat Festival

The MyState Australian Wooden Boat Festival is one of Hobart’s most beloved annual events, attracting international, national and local boats, exhibits and visitors. The festival is an exciting and vibrant celebration of Australia’s rich maritime culture, so go for a wander along the Hobart waterfront and check it all out. Highlights include: the Parade of Sail; the stalls, exhibitors, food and drink at the Maritime Marketplace; Quick & Dirty Boat Building; and the International Wooden Boat Symposium.

5. Port Arthur Historic Site Summer Activities

Spend a day or two exploring the ruins at the Port Arthur Historic Site and discover fascinating stories about the people who lived and worked there. The site is family friendly (well-behaved dogs are even permitted on leash) and over summer there are additional activities for families to enjoy together. From 12pm to 3pm, drop into the Education Centre (the Accountant’s House) to play 19th century games, have a go at making your own convict tattoo or peg doll, design a convict love token, or learn the art of letter writing and wax-sealing Victorian-style.

6. Summer Discovery Ranger Program

Every summer, Tasmania Parks & Wildlife’s Discovery Rangers work their magic at a variety of free, fun and educational activities around the state. Visitors to our beautiful national parks and reserves will have the chance to join in a wide range of activities such as guided walks, evening talks, children’s activities, and more.

This year’s program hasn’t been announced yet, so keep an eye on the Tasmania Parks website and Facebook page for details. Last year, Discover Rangers were spotted at the Tasman and Forestier Peninsulas, Bruny Island, Tinderbox and the Peter Murrell Reserve.

7. Summer Cricket at Blundstone Arena

When: December 2018 & January 2019

An Aussie summer is all about the cricket! Head along and support the Hobart Hurricanes at their matches on the 24, 28 and 30 December 2018 and 4 January 2019.
