Walking into Mona (Museum of Old and New art) at any time is like entering another world, but at night it is a whole new adventure.

Joining several work colleagues I recently experienced the Golden Hour at Mona. This included a spectacular sunset display courtesy of James Turrell’s rooftop installation, Armana, followed by an amazing three course meal at the Mona Wine Bar’s communal dining table.

MelindaGoldenSipping Moorilla bubbles and sitting on cosy concrete benches (they are heated to keep you toasty), we took in Turrell’s breathtaking 45 minute sunset experience. Described as “kind of what God would do if he built a gazebo,” Turrell’s work seems to turn the sky supernatural colours, making you question what you are seeing and your own understanding of the science of the sky. I found myself asking “surely the sky can’t change colour because of some lights at Mona?”

Simply breathtaking, Armana is a sensory overload.

The Golden Hour presented by Mona is a fantastic opportunity to follow up Armana with tantalising dishes prepared using local produce by Mona Executive Sous Chef, Vince Trim using his heavy metal kitchen.

Our menu included sweet corn pannacotta with baby spring vegetables, 12 hour roasted saddleback of pork and poached pears and prunes in a saffron englaise (served in the classic Mona vagina bowl). Not to mention an abundance of delectable vegetable sides also shining after some heavy metal treatment or the sneaky piece of Pyengana cheddar with honey and pear to finish. Vegetarians were superbly catered for with the lightest gnocchi I have ever tasted.

BowlAt $79 (add $50 for matched wine), the Golden Hour dining experience provides exceptional value.

Mona lists it’s sunrise and sunset schedule for Armana viewing at its website, Whilst I recommend the full Golden Hour viewing and dining experience, you can also just turn up and take in Armana. Bring your own snacks and warm gear and prepare to be visually blown away. Apparently there is a fabulous pizza shop around the corner from Mona, another perfect partner for taking in sunset.

Next on my list: Armana at sunrise with hot choccie in hand.

The Golden Hour experience operates Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Bookings essential: phone 6277 9900.
