Battery Point is Hobart’s most historic suburb; it began life as a home for mariners working out of Hobart Town and is still a residential area today with many homes classified by the National Trust. Just a short walk from Salamanca Place and Hobart’s waterfront, Battery Point retains all the character of a Cornish fishing village of the last century with restaurants, antique shops and several pubs.
Of special interest is Arthurs Circus, a ring of early cottages surrounding the old village green at the heart of Battery Point, and the colonial museum, Narryna, with its collection of fine and decorative arts.
You can walk to Battery Point from Salamanca Place up Kelly’s Steps (1839). The steps were originally cut into a cliff face that overlooked the wharfs of Sullivans Cove. The warehouses that line the cove – now Salamanca Place – were quarried from the cliffs. Walking tours are available.
We acknowledge the Tasmanian Aboriginal people and their enduring custodianship of lutruwita / Tasmania. We honour 40,000 years of uninterrupted care, protection and belonging to these islands, before the invasion and colonisation of European settlement. As a destination that welcomes visitors to these lands, we acknowledge our responsibility to represent to our visitors, Tasmania’s deep and complex history, fully, respectfully and truthfully.
We acknowledge the Aboriginal people who continue to care for this country today. We pay our respects to their elders, past and present. We honour their stories, songs, art, and culture, and their aspirations for the future of their people and these lands. We respectfully ask that tourism be a part of that future.
