Cockle Creek, on Tasmania’s south-east coast, is the most southerly point you can drive in Australia. It’s also on the edge of Tasmania’s Southwest National Park and the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Area.

This tiny seaside settlement of a few shacks is ideal for a summer swim, picnic or camping. It’s also the beginning – or the end – of the South Coast Track, one of Tasmania’s great bushwalks – and the furthest south you can drive in Australia.

A stroll along the beach will reveal the beauty of this remote place. Continue to Fishers Point Navigation Light and Pilot Station Ruins and take the well-marked track to South East Cape for stunning cliff top views of Maatsuyker Island.

Cockle Creek is a 2-hr drive (148 km) south of Hobart via Geeveston.
