Dunalley is a small fishing village on the way to Port Arthur, surrounded by open countryside and beautiful waterways and known for its super-fresh seafood. In Dunalley, you can buy the best fish and chips you’re ever likely to find. Try the laid-back Dunalley Fish Market with crayfish cooked daily and oysters opened to order, or the Dunalley Waterfront Café, a contemporary art gallery hosted in an atmospheric 1942 timber building and a boutique restaurant highlighting the best regional produce.
The town is built around the man-made Denison Canal, hand-dug between 1901 and 1905, with its swing bridge for road traffic. The swing bridge allows boats easy access between Blackman’s Bay and Frederick Henry Bay. Local legend has it that the toll to the gatekeeper was a bottle of beer.
Dunalley is a 45-min drive (57 km) south of Hobart.
We acknowledge the Tasmanian Aboriginal people and their enduring custodianship of lutruwita / Tasmania. We honour 40,000 years of uninterrupted care, protection and belonging to these islands, before the invasion and colonisation of European settlement. As a destination that welcomes visitors to these lands, we acknowledge our responsibility to represent to our visitors, Tasmania’s deep and complex history, fully, respectfully and truthfully.
We acknowledge the Aboriginal people who continue to care for this country today. We pay our respects to their elders, past and present. We honour their stories, songs, art, and culture, and their aspirations for the future of their people and these lands. We respectfully ask that tourism be a part of that future.
