Prepare to be amazed at Gordon Dam! Located in Tasmania’s rugged southwest, this engineering marvel has been standing strong since its construction in 1974. At 140 meters high, it’s one of the tallest dams in the Southern Hemisphere, offering breathtaking views of the Gordon River Gorge and beyond.

Take a walk along the curved wall for a true sense of its scale, and don’t forget your camera—this spot is a photographer’s dream. Whether you’re intrigued by its role in hydropower or just seeking an unforgettable adventure in Tasmania’s southwest wilderness, Gordon Dam is a must-visit destination.

The water from Lake Gordon is used to generate hydroelectricity in Gordon Power Station, which sits 183 metres underground the South-West Wilderness. Hydro Tasmania has been generating renewable energy from Tasmania’s abundant rain for over 100 years from the Gordon scheme and many others across Tasmania’s Central Highlands, West Coast and Northern regions.
