Oatlands

Oatlands

Oatlands is an historic town with the largest collection of colonial sandstone buildings in Australia, many of which were convict built. Its intact Georgian townscape offers a complete representation of the architecture, urban design and the cultural heritage of early European settlement. The Midland Highway bypasses the town these days, but it’s worth taking the short detour to spend some time in Oatlands.

The most noticeable silhouette on the Oatlands skyline and visible from the highway is the Callington Mill. Built in 1837, this Lincolnshire tower mill is the only operating mill of its type in the Southern Hemisphere.

Other buildings of interest include the Supreme Court House (1829), St Peters Church (1888), St Pauls Pugin Church (1850), Uniting Church (opened 1856), and the Oatlands Gaol and Gaoler’s Residence (1834 and 1836).

Oatlands is a 1-hr drive (80 km) north of Hobart.
