Experience the art of hand-made being created right before your eyes at The Artisan’s Hand, the working studios of Balfour House. Located in the middle of the historic township of Cygnet, only a 50-minute drive south of Hobart. The Artisan’s Hand accommodates both permanent artisans and a rotating cast of artists-in-residence showcasing their work in studios within the house.
The studios are truly working spaces as the artisans are designing and making pieces every day, clearly demonstrating their skills, their unique tools and their knowledge of trade and craft. As you meet the artisans, you are encouraged to ask questions, explore their work and get up close with the process as unique techniques and fine workmanship are on show. The works created in the studios are displayed throughout the gallery and are available to purchase, or you can commission a unique piece to be made for you.
An ongoing program of workshops and classes is also available from not only the resident artisans but a host of other creatives from around the Huon Valley. Explore the art of hand-made in a half-day, full-day or full-term adventure and collaborate with like-minded people at The Artisan’s Hand at Balfour House.
We acknowledge the Tasmanian Aboriginal people and their enduring custodianship of lutruwita / Tasmania. We honour 40,000 years of uninterrupted care, protection and belonging to these islands, before the invasion and colonisation of European settlement. As a destination that welcomes visitors to these lands, we acknowledge our responsibility to represent to our visitors, Tasmania’s deep and complex history, fully, respectfully and truthfully.
We acknowledge the Aboriginal people who continue to care for this country today. We pay our respects to their elders, past and present. We honour their stories, songs, art, and culture, and their aspirations for the future of their people and these lands. We respectfully ask that tourism be a part of that future.
