The D’Entrecasteaux Channel, the expanse of water between lunawuni / Bruny Island and the south-east mainland of Tasmania, was sighted by Abel Tasman in 1642 and surveyed in 1792 by Bruni D’Entrecasteaux.
The first township on the road south is Margate. Located about 20 minutes from Hobart, it has everything you’ll need to stock up for your trip down the Channel.
Along its Tasmanian mainland coastline are quaint coastal towns which embrace their proximity to the water. Driving from Kingston on the Channel Highway takes you through Margate, Snug and Kettering, the gateway to lunawuni / Bruny Island, and onto Woodbridge, Birchs Bay, Middleton with Cygnet and the Huon Valley on the inside of the peninsula. Boating, fishing and watersports are all an important part of everyday life.
The Channel is the gateway to lunawuni / Bruny Island – the gem of Tasmania’s South.
In summer soak up some sun and and take a dip at one of the little hidden beaches along the Channel. Go hunting for cosy cafes, art and trinkets to take home with you, and drink some of the best pinot you’ll ever drink at a vineyard with views overlooking the water.
We acknowledge the Tasmanian Aboriginal people and their enduring custodianship of lutruwita / Tasmania. We honour 40,000 years of uninterrupted care, protection and belonging to these islands, before the invasion and colonisation of European settlement.
As a destination that welcomes visitors to these lands, we acknowledge our responsibility to represent to our visitors, Tasmania’s deep and complex history, fully, respectfully and truthfully.
We acknowledge the Aboriginal people who continue to care for this country today. We pay our respects to their elders, past and present. We honour their stories, songs, art, and culture, and their aspirations for the future of their people and these lands. We respectfully ask that tourism be a part of that future.
