In the far south of Tasmania, the forest parts to reveal a spectacular open buttongrass plain. Your modern two bedroom self-contained cabin is a comfortable eco-experience with 12-volt solar electricity, wood fired heating and is free from distractions like television, wifi and in-room phones.
You have exclusive occupancy; just one guest accommodation in a 20-hectare private reserve. Comfort and wildlife make Buttongrass Retreat the perfect place to base for exploring the natural beauty of Tasmania’s far south.
This habitat is home to a unique range of flowers, birds and animals, a community found nowhere else. The view to the Southern Ranges is spectacular and sometimes snow-capped.
Under 2 hours drive from Hobart (just past Dover and Southport) this is a great base to explore the nearby Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs, or a short drive to Cockle Creek then walk to the southern-most place in Australia.
Important: Buttongrass is a place to escape from the technology hassles of modern life for a few days. There is no television, limited 240-volt electricity, enough to charge a mobile phone or camera but not sufficient to run a laptop computer for more than an hour a day.

As a destination that welcomes visitors to these lands, we acknowledge our responsibility to represent to our visitors, Tasmania’s deep and complex history, fully, respectfully and truthfully.
We acknowledge the Aboriginal people who continue to care for this country today. We pay our respects to their elders, past and present. We honour their stories, songs, art, and culture, and their aspirations for the future of their people and these lands. We respectfully ask that tourism be a part of that future.
