Lake Leake was created in the 1880s to supply water for Campbell Town. Today, Lake Leake offers a peaceful getaway for lucky shack owners and visitors seeking a break from the daily grind. The lake is particularly enjoyed by fishing enthusiasts. We’ve put together some tips on visiting this tranquil spot.
1. Stop at Campbell Town
Lake Leake is around a half hour drive east from Campbell Town, which is a popular stop for drivers travelling the Heritage Highway. Stop and explore the 19th century township, admire the convict-built Red Bridge (c. 1838), relax in the park, search for an ancestor along the Convict Brick Trail, and enjoy a bite to eat. You could even stay the night in charming heritage accommodation and make a longer trip of it.
2. Try your luck fly fishing
Once you arrive at Lake Leake, you’ll be keen to get amongst the activities! This is one scenic body of water, so head out in the boat and feel any lingering stress melt away.
Lake Leake is a premium trout water offering some of Tasmania’s best early and late season wet fly-fishing. The lake is regularly stocked with brown and rainbow trout. Please remember that anyone over 14 years of age must hold a current Inland Angling Licence to fish in any open public inland water in Tasmania.
3. Explore on foot
Soak up the scenery with a lakeside wander. For ultimate tranquility, get up early and watch the changing sky reflected on the lake as the sun rises. On a still day, listen to the fish frolicking in the water and see their ripples on the lake.
4. Have fun with the dog
The dog will be thrilled if you take them with you to such a top spot! Go for walkies, play a game of fetch, and enjoy the lake.
5. Watch for wildlife
There are plenty of native animals living in the bushland surrounding the lake. Keep your eyes peeled for bouncy things, possums, wombats, and birdlife (birders, have your notebooks ready). Tip: do not feed the wildlife (especially the possums).
6. Enjoy country hospitality at the Lake Leake Inn
Indulge in a hearty meal, share a drink, shoot some pool, throw some darts, pop your favourite song on the duke box, and enjoy the social scene at the Lake Leake Inn. Coffee and cake in the lounge bar cafe always hits the spot! The inn also offers comfortable accommodation.
7. Set up camp
If you’re not lucky enough to have a shack, you can stay at the inn or settle in with good friends at the campground. Rug up and be sure to come prepared with your own firewood and drinking water. Stargazing over the lake is a magical experience, surrounded by the bush, away from bright city lights. You may never want to go home!
