It’s a Date: Romantic Activities in Southern Tasmania

No need to act all coy, you old romantic, you! If you’re looking for some sweet ideas to woo your sweetheart, you’re in the right place. Whether you’re looking for ideas for a date, honeymoon or romantic getaways, we’ve put together some tips on romantic things to do for couples in Southern Tasmania.

Even better, these fun date ideas won’t break the bank! Because it’s the thought that counts, right? (Plus, what’s sexier than planning your financial future, sticking to a realistic budget, and living comfortably within your means?)

If you just won the lottery, are a high-flying entrepreneur, looking to spice things up a little, or come from good old fashioned old money, you might also enjoy our more extravagant suggestions.

The love boat

Cruising the scenic waterways of Southern Tasmania is a romantic couples activity (you can reenact that Jack and Rose ‘I’m flying’ scene). For bonus points, point out all the seabirds that mate for life.

  • Catch the ferry out to Mona (maybe even splurge on the Posh Pit) and spend a day taking in the art, pretending to know about architecture, bouncing on the trampoline, eating and drinking, and relaxing on the lawn. Museum entry is free for Tasmanian residents, and on weekends Walshy also puts on free live music, so settle in.
  • Jump on board the Peppermint Bay Cruise, take in the views of the Derwent Estuary and the d’Entrecasteaux Channel, enjoy a delicious lunch at the Peppermint Bay Hotel, then cruise back to Hobart.
  • Huon River Cruises offers regular calm water cruises on the scenic Huon River, onboard their traditional sailing ketch.
  • Join Peninsula Cruising for a leisurely cruise around Dover’s beautiful bay (the charming fishing village is also a great spot for a romantic getaway).
  • Catch the ferry from Kettering to Bruny Island for a romantic island-off-an-island getaway.

Old fashioned romance

Please don’t let Tinder be the gold standard. Try harder, for the sake of humanity.

  • Feel like royalty on a sightseeing tour of Hobart’s historic areas—including Battery Point, Salamanca Place, and the waterfront—with Heritage Horse Drawn Carriages.
  • Gaze into your beloved’s eyes over a good old fashioned high tea. Two of our favourite spots are Lazy Teas at Bushy Park and Villa Howden in the Channel.
  • Pull together some gourmet Tasmanian treats for a romantic picnic. Our top location tips include: the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens; the banks of the Coal River by the historic Richmond Bridge; the Art Farm Birchs Bay; or the beach.
  • Rise early to watch a special sunrise together (try the Tessellated Pavement or kunanyi/Mt Wellington) or go for a romantic stroll along the beach at sunset.
  • Book a private tour and Poltergeist Gin tasting at Shene Distillery, an atmospheric 200-year-old estate at Pontville, for a spirited and enchanting experience.
  • If a tandem bicycle is a bit too old fashioned for your taste, join Tasmanian E-Bike Adventures for a more modern exploration of the great outdoors on electronic mountain bikes.

Heart through stomach

Never go to bed angry hungry.
