Taranna is a small, sleepy settlement just north of Port Arthur Historic Site on the shores of Norfolk Bay. Taranna was once the terminus for a tramway from Port Arthur – the first tramway in Australia and probably the only tramway using human horsepower along its 7-km line. Today, the town is noted for its picturesque Presbyterian Church.
Also at Taranna is the popular Tasmanian Devil Unzoo where you can watch Tassie devils at feeding time and be mesmerised by the sea eagle show. The park is dedicated to wildlife protection and rescue and has extensive breeding programs.
Taranna is also home to the Federation Chocolate Factory and Heritage Museum where you can watch the making of these fine handmade chocolates and learn about Tasmania’s convict history, blacksmithing, and saw-milling artifacts.
We acknowledge the Tasmanian Aboriginal people and their enduring custodianship of lutruwita / Tasmania. We honour 40,000 years of uninterrupted care, protection and belonging to these islands, before the invasion and colonisation of European settlement. As a destination that welcomes visitors to these lands, we acknowledge our responsibility to represent to our visitors, Tasmania’s deep and complex history, fully, respectfully and truthfully.
We acknowledge the Aboriginal people who continue to care for this country today. We pay our respects to their elders, past and present. We honour their stories, songs, art, and culture, and their aspirations for the future of their people and these lands. We respectfully ask that tourism be a part of that future.
