The concept of Wisdom Through Wood emerged from the Tasmanian forest in 2012. It’s now the go-to place to learn green woodworking in Australia.

The school, and open-air workshop, are surrounded by tall trees and a fern-lined creek which nestles naturally into the forest on the southern slopes of kunanyi / Mt Wellington. It’s about a 25-minute drive from Hobart.

Our woodworking courses range from one to nine days and progress from an introduction to the tools and techniques of green woodworking through to creating a chair from a tree. We also make stools, spoons and bowls. The longer courses are not more difficult, they simply go into more detail and you experience a broader range of tools and techniques.

Most courses will have four to five participants and you can be almost any age. The youngest student we’ve had so far was 6 years of age. And the oldest was 78. Participants are from all walks of life and often have vastly different levels of woodworking experience.

In the open-air workshop, you’ll have your own pole lathe, draw horse and hand tools. We’ll guide you through the experience you seek – in a way, and at a pace, that suits you.
