Raised amidst the stunning landscapes of the Huon Valley, Gill’s inherent love for wildlife and the natural world was nurtured from a young age. Her vibrant and dynamic personality seamlessly blended a creative spirit with a deep-seated affinity for sports, crafting a foundation that would later find expression through her lens.
While her early endeavours leaned toward culinary artistry—baking was a forte that delighted taste buds but perhaps posed a challenge to waistlines—Gill’s creative journey took a new trajectory when she discovered the captivating realm of photography. Initially self-taught, Gill embarked on this visual odyssey, leveraging her innate eye for detail and artistry. Guided by a friend versed in the nuances of photography, she honed her skills through consistent practice, capturing the raw beauty of Tasmania’s landscapes and wildlife.
However, photography didn’t simply represent an artistic pursuit for Gill; it became an unexpected solace, a sanctuary amid life’s trials. After encountering severe PTSD and Disassociated Amnesia, stemming from her experiences as a dedicated police officer for over three decades, photography emerged as a therapeutic outlet. Seeking respite from bustling environments, Gill found solace in the tranquil corners of Tasmania, relishing the serenity and beauty of lesser-known locales. These quiet moments became her refuge, where the mind found peace and an authentic connection with nature blossomed, evoking a deep sense of gratitude and wonder.
Although Gill’s primary focus lies in capturing the breathtaking essence of Tasmania’s landscapes, her lens extends beyond the horizons of land and sky. Engaged in the world of sailing photography, she has documented prestigious events like the Launceston to Hobart races, the Australian National Sharpies, and various local happenings for the Sandy Bay Derwent Sailing Squadron. Additionally, her portfolio encompasses the artistry of accommodation shoots, where she expertly captures the essence and allure of spaces.
Gill Dawton’s journey from law enforcement to the realm of photography serves as a testament to the transformative power of art and nature. Through her lens, she not only encapsulates the splendour of Tasmania’s terrain but also reveals the healing potency found in embracing the quietude of the less-travelled paths—a visual narrative that inspires awe and introspection.
